A horrific crime—at an ominous time

The criminal underworld of medieval Damascus is certainly not my field of expertise. But as for the contemporary audience of Ibn Ṭūlūn’s chronicle Mufākahat al-Khillān, these stories also draw the attention of current readers. This short post relates one such instance from Damascus at the end of the Mamluk period.

About

Damascus anecdotes is devoted to (mostly) Mamluk and Ottoman historical sources: chronicles, biographies, topographies, as well as to the objects containing them, namely manuscripts.

Damascus Anecdotes is a product of my research projects. It provides short descriptions of primary works (and the manuscripts we have of them), biographical sketches, and finds in the archives.

Most of all, Damascus Anecdotes shall be about the joy of reading these materials and the treasure hunt that leads me to them.

All too often, exciting finds have to be discarded in publications for sake of the argument. Here they shall receive their due place.
